CCORS Race #4 Report with pictures!

Next CCORS Race May 1st at Blue Clay!

Race #4 in the Coastal Carolina Off-Road Series was this past Sunday and it was a roaring good time for all involved! We had 67 competitors from all over the state (and a couple that weren’t from NC) that made this one fun race to be apart of! Of course we couldn’t have gotten off to such a smooth start for the day without a few hiccups early that morning. The lovely storm that came through NC on Saturday that caused massive destruction wherever it went just grazed the Wilmington area in a stroke of luck for us. However with winds easily howling at over 20 mph it was no surprise when I arrived at the trailhead to find that multiple tree’s had come down. Luckily one had already been moved from across a bridge (and the bridge would later be easily repaired) and the other wasn’t to big. So as Jeremy cleared one section of trail from minor debris I went to work on the other tree with an axe (which by the way I believe was the dullest axe in history of dull axes!).
With the course cleared it was time for us to get on with the getting on! People began registering and we had our hands full getting everyone set up to race.
The morning went smoothly from that point forward. We had a wonderful pre-race meeting that went over the rules of the course and the big safety talk.
In the mean time the kids race went off without a hitch. Congrats to Mateo (1st Place) and Haley (2nd) for their great showing in the kids race.

Mateo and Haley are off to the races!

Then of course, the adults were off to the races as well! Here are just a a few of the over 300 photo’s taken by Jeremy on Sunday.

Note: Bob Jones gets the hardcore rider of the day award! He broke his seat post OFF at the start of his 2nd lap and completed an entire lap without it!

Complete results from the day are available now! You can find them here.

Special thanks goes out to all of our volunteers for the event including SueMay (and kids), Noah, Jeremy, Jay and Jamie (our bike patrol), Brannon, Corey, and everyone else that played a part in making this event something worth having!

With that in mind, the next event at Blue Clay is the 5th race in the CCORS series and we are again looking for volunteers that are willing to help out! All the same jobs are available but for simplicity I will post that at another time.

By the way, over 300 pictures are available for viewing on the Cape Fear SORBA facebook page! Want to see them?

We have added their events to our calender and to our links page so if you have additional interest after reading this post just follow the links!

Carolina Youth Mountain Bike League (CYMBL)

The races will also offer free workshops on bicycle maintenance, nutrition, safety, trail etiquette and recovery. The hope is to create an environment for young cyclists to learn, exercise, and have fun at a low cost in a family setting. CYMBL is in the process of petitioning for League status with NICA for the Carolina region. We are a non-profit organization through the Community Focus Foundation.

High Fives and Plenty of Smiles, at the Opening Event of the Spring 2011 Youth Mountain Bike Series

Hayden Miller Wins High School Division
Max Brinker and Megan Condon Secure Middle School Division Victories

WILMINGTON, NC (March 26, 2011)– The threat of rain did not deter young mountain bikers from coming out to the first event of the Spring 2011 Youth MTB Series at Blue Clay Bike Park.  The series, open to elementary, middle school and high school age youth, features three events including March 26, April 16 and May 21.

In a testament to how dedicated kids and their parents can be to healthy, active lifestyles, some participants came straight from their soccer games and hopped onto their bikes.  Others built up the nerve to ride the course for the first time, after only a week without training wheels. Parents, siblings and friends were on hand throughout the afternoon cheering on the participants. The elementary school division rode a three mile course while the middle school and high school divisions rode six and twelve miles respectively.

“We look forward to building upon the momentum that’s been created from this first event,” said event director, Jennifer Mangiacapre.  “The vibe was upbeat, and it was entertaining to watch the kids maneuver around the course. Most of them were pretty fearless.”

Impressively, a few competitors chose to push themselves and competed up a division, including fifth grader, Max Brinker (Wilmington NC), who won the middle school division, and eighth grader, Hayden Miller (Raleigh, NC) who won the high school division.  “My family and I were visiting from Raleigh and were planning to recreationally ride Blue Clay today, when we stumbled across the event,” said Miller.  “I am fresh out of rehabilitating my shoulder from a snowboarding accident, so it felt good to get out and test myself.”

The next event of the Spring 2011 Youth MTB Series takes place on Saturday, April 16 at Blue Clay Bike Park, starting at 12pm.  For complete results, and photos from today’s event visit www.wilmyouthmtbseries.wordpress.com

The Spring 2011 Youth MTB Series would like to thank the following sponsors for their support: Back on Bikes, Cape Fear SORBA Chapter, Halley White DDS., Two Wheeler Dealer, CB Surf Shop, Another Skate Shop, Southern Signs, Sock Guy and BB&T.
