CFSORBA Update for August 29th!

Hello Cape Fear SORBA! Lots of news and updates for you all! Lets get to it shall we?

Ok first thing first. The Ladies group ride for this Tuesday is a no go. With hurricane Irene coming into our life’s over the weekend we have some cleaning up to do in her aftermath! So instead, we are giving an open invite to anyone and everyone that might want to come out and help out cleaning up a bit! Meet up at Blue Clay about 6pm and bring your rakes and maybe a small hatchet or the like. The goal is to simply rake and clean up the trail a few sections at a time. Make sure you sign in with SueMay first so you can get credit for your hours! With everyone’s help we can have the trail ready to ride in no time!

In other news, the Fun Day at Brunswick Nature Park is coming up fast! The event takes place from 9am to 4pm and we would like to invite all of our members to come out and take part! You can come out and ride with us throughout the trails we have been building or you can volunteer to show folks around the trails! We are going to have two tents set up side by side – one will have an information table with information about Cape Fear SORBA, and the other will have our plans for Brunswick Nature Park. We will also have a bike display of different types of mountain bikes that are suitable for the trails at Brunswick (Special thanks to Two Wheeler Dealer for loaning us bikes!) Other than that, we are there to answer questions, encourage people to come out and use the park, and simply have fun.

Also, remember the due date for ordering your Cape Fear SORBA Jersey is fast approaching! Place your order no later than September 3rd to make sure its included! Go to the link RIGHT HERE for details on how to order.

That’s all for now Cape Fear SORBA! Remember, help us clean up Blue Clay or come out and enjoy the Fun Day! Either way, its all good! Thanks for reading,

Happy Trails,

Austin Fenwick

Workday and Club Meeting: April 9th at BCNP

Come out and help us build the trail!

Hello Cape Fear SORBA. The club has a few announcements to make.

CAPE FEAR SORBA ELECTIONS
First off it is time for elections for the New Year. We are accepting nominations for all positions as follows: Treasurer, Secretary, Vice-President, and President.

Please email all nominations to Barry Wray at: wrayb@uncw.edu

We will be accepting nominations for these positions from now until the April 2nd. Election day will be April 9th.

WORKDAY AND CLUB MEETING APRIL 9TH AT BRUNSWICK NATURE PARK
Speaking of Election Day, that day will also be the day we have a large workday at the Brunswick County Nature Park. We are currently in the process of cutting in the new beginner trail using mini-excavators and once that is done we will need manpower to help with the actual shaping and forming of the new trail. Want to see what we have done so far? Check out our video and blog post here: https://capefearsorba.org/?p=281

We don’t want this to be just a regular workday though. We would like this to be a family friendly day! Bring the family out to the park to enjoy the beautiful spring weather and help us build the next segment of trail that will be the most family friendly beginner trail in our region. For the meeting we will be providing hamburgers and hotdogs as well as drinks. Everyone is encouraged to bring side dishes along for everyone to enjoy!

MEETING DETAILS: THE WHO WHAT WHEN WHERE AND WHY!
The workday will begin at 9am at the last parking lot farthest from the entrance to the park across from the picnic shelter. We will be moving dirt around and shaping/forming the new trail. Please bring shovels and rakes with you. The club will provide additional tools. The workday will run from 9-5 that day and you can show up anytime during the day to help, even if its just for an hour or two. Remember you have to be a Cape Fear SORBA member to participate in the workday. Fun Fact: You can now join CFSORBA directly from our website navigation bar! We also encourage your to bring the family out with you to simply enjoy the park.

The club meeting, with elections as the main focus of our agenda, will begin at approximately 5pm at the picnic shelter across from the parking lot. Hamburgers, hotdogs, and drinks will be provided by the club. We ask and encourage you to bring additional side-dishes to help supplement the meal! If you cannot attend the meeting you can also vote via email or stop and vote during the workday if you are able to be there for part of the day.

Please RSVP to the meeting so we know how much food to bring! Email Greg at: gregb@brinsonandsons.com to RSVP

DIRECTIONS
If coming from Wilmington, follow the signs across the bridge for US 17N/US 74. Take the exit for State Route 133/Southport/Oak Island and make a left off the exit ramp. Go approximately 7 miles and you will come to the Brunswick County Nature Park on your right. Enter the park and drive all the way to the very back where you will find a round parking lot across from a covered picnic shelter. That is the parking lot we will begin our day in. If you come later in the day someone will be stationed at either the parking lot or the picnic shelter to direct you.

QUESTIONS
If you have any questions concerning the workday/meeting please email President Greg Brinson (gregb@brinsonandsons.com) or Vice President Austin Fenwick (austincycles@gmail.com).

Thanks everyone, we hope to see you at the workday and/or meeting!

SORBA update: Race Rescheduled, BCNP work day, elections coming soon

Hello Cape Fear SORBA and welcome to this edition of the page update!

First I would like to announce that the recently postponed race at Blue Clay from the CCORS series has been rescheduled.  Due to heavy rains we have had lately the decision was made to hold off on the race until May 1st, giving Blue Clay a chance to dry out before the next scheduled race there. For now remember that the next race in the series is scheduled for April 3rd in Greenville at the Bicycle Post. We hope to see you there!!

Next on the agenda is an update on the Brunswick County Nature Park (or BCNP if you like). First though, a little video for you all.

Over the weekend we had the first chance to have some mini excavators at the park to help us cut in the new beginner trail!

Jere and President Greg work on the new Beginner Trail

We estimate that once the new section of trail is cut its going to be about 1.5 miles long making the total trail cut about 3 miles. Check out a couple more photo’s from the work.

This is what the land looked like before the trail cut began

The intial cut by the mini excavator. Now the hard work will begin..

Of course the mini excavators can only do part of the work for us. The hard work for the rest of us will be forming and shaping the trail properly. We have to take into account the width we want the trail to be, the angle we shape it so that water will run off, and of course we must worry about how the trail rides. All of that means alot of shoveling, raking, and tamping. Something like…

The hard work: shaping new trail

We estimate that it will take another 2 weekends to finish the initial cut with the equipment. From that point we will need manpower to finish the rest of the trail. The more people we have out for the work the faster it will go. Currently we are discussing scheduling a big work day for sometime in April to do the work. In addition, that work day will double as a club meeting and election day for the new year. Expect an email about elections in the coming week.

Of course though, no work day would be complete without riding over the new stuff we just built. Michael, who was the first to ride the first section of trail we built at Brunswick, just happened to have his bike handy! So for without further adieu I give you the first rider to ride the beginner trail!

Michael tests fresh trail

Just remember everyone, when we get the new workday scheduled the more people that show up the faster we will have this new section up and riding! I hope to see you all very soon!

Mountain bike or die everyone, stay safe on the trails!
